Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) is a method of recording scores used to calculate a golf handicap. Its purpose is to avoid recording a very high score on an individual hole which might inflate the handicap calculation. Equitable stroke control is a sliding scale system, based on the difficulty of the course and the current handicap of the golfer.

May 01
The golf handicap system allows you to measure your golf performance over time. The best 10 of the most recent 20 scores are used to calculate the handicap index and thus the handicap for the course and tees played. (The system will begin to give you a handicap after 5 scores.) The gross scores posted should be properly adjusted for equitable stroke control as outlined in the previous article. Over the golf season and from year to year your handicap index will change which will enable you to determine if your efforts to improve are paying off and/or what aspects of your game need work.
