The weather over the last ten days was not helpful in our efforts to clean-up the property and prepare the golf course for opening, but we continue to target May 1st to open the golf course. Opening day for the driving range is yet to be finalized as it is contingent on the irrigation contractors’ access to the golf course. It’s likely the irrigation work will have to start on the driving range tee decks as they should be sufficiently dry for them to get started this week.

Watching The Masters always reminds me exactly why I love this game and, if I’m being honest, why it can drive me just a little bit crazy too. One day you feel unstoppable, everything clicks, every swing feels effortless. And the very next it’s like you’ve never held a club before. With a bit of luck on your side, you might card a beautiful eagle or ricochet off a tree, not once, but twice only to somehow land right back on the fairway. And then, of course, there are those holes we’d all rather forget. The dreaded 10! But that’s golf. It’s unpredictable, humbling, and exhilarating. A constant challenge not just against the course, but against yourself. That’s exactly why I keep coming back.
Speaking of coming back, we’re looking forward to kicking off our season together at the Ladies Opening on May 12th. We’ll be playing 1 net best ball format, with a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m. There will be a light breakfast and a short information session at 8:30 a.m.
https://www.golfgenius.com/pages/12118574264840372431 It’s a great chance to reconnect, meet new faces, and get excited for the season ahead. The Tuesday Ladies game schedule is just being finalized and will be shared in next week’s edition.

Greetings gentlemen, and welcome to the 2026 season at Mad River! No doubt we will have a great season with the course updates being put to the test, and the 35th anniversary celebrations along the way.
I’d like to start off with one more thank you to Colin Tyler for two excellent years as our Men’s Captain. Colin made some great changes to the men’s program which will no doubt be part of the club for years to come. Well done, Colin! In addition, I would like to formally introduce Brad Robbins as our Men’s Vice Captain. Brad and I are hoping to build on the foundation laid by Colin and prior Captains and hope you will participate in and enjoy the various events that are of interest to you. Brad and I welcome your feedback, so please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Right out of the gate, there are a few items to draw your attention to:
The Men’s Member-Guest will take place on Friday July 24th. Once again, we expect this event to be in high demand and we will once again use a lottery to fill the field. Sign-ups for the event will open at 10am on May 5th and close at 5pm on May 7th. The draw will take place on May 8th, after which you will be notified of the results.

MOTHER’S DAY SPECIAL
Swing Into Mother’s Day
May 11 – 18, 2026 · Six spots only
Offered with love, for Mad River friends & family
Mother’s Day is one of those occasions where the gift usually doesn’t quite land. Flowers wilt by Tuesday. Brunch is rushed. The card disappears into a kitchen drawer.
This year I wanted to make something worth giving.

Fuel for the Round – Supporting Canadian & Local Businesses
Building on what we introduced last week, we’re continuing to expand our healthy options at the turn—making it easier to stay fuelled and focused throughout your round. We’ll be bringing back our house-made energy protein bites, made with peanut butter, dates, chocolate chips, coconut, cranberries and almonds. These have quickly become a member favourite, offering a naturally satisfying boost when you need it most.
In addition to our in-house offerings, we’re proud to support Canadian-made products that align with our commitment to quality and simplicity. This season, you’ll find Daryl’s Bars, handcrafted in Windsor, Ontario that are made with natural ingredients. Each bar delivers 20g of protein with just 5g of sugar, making it an excellent option for a quick, balanced refuel. Choose from a variety of flavours including chocolate hazelnut and strawberry cream.

Notes from the Chef Stephen Sagar
From the Mad River Grill
Beef prices have been grounds for conversation lately, and for good reason. Across Canada, consumers are seeing higher costs at grocery stores and restaurants alike. And for most people, this simply doesn’t cut it.
From my understanding, several factors are searing this trend. Prolonged drought conditions in key cattle-producing regions have reduced herd sizes, tightening supply. At the same time, feed, fuel, and transportation costs have all increased, placing additional pressure on producers and distributors. With fewer cattle available and higher input costs across the board, the price of beef has naturally followed suit. As it turns out, steaks are seasoned in more ways than one.

This early undated photograph (possibly 1990 -1991) captures the beginnings of Mad River’s practice area as construction was underway. What started here would be expanded and renovated over the years to become a key part of the club’s golf experience.
