General Manager - Gary Ward

Despite the slow start to the season due to the cool temperatures and wet conditions, the course in in beautiful condition and it promises to be a wonderful summer.
The May long weekend really kicked off the season with our first few busy day’s, our initial equipment demo day, putter fitting day with the new Sam Putt lab and a new event on our social calendar, musical entertainment from the Breakdown County Boys.
These activities created a terrific atmosphere around the club, the Breakdown County Boys was a sold-out show and an it was an enjoyable evening of entertainment. I am interested in what other types of acts you would be interested in attending.
New Staff – Incentives and Annual Education Scholarship
We have a terrific group of staff at the Club this summer and a number that are new in both the golf operation and food and beverage. Mad River now has two staff incentive programs, an ongoing program that rewards outstanding day to day performance and a year-long scholarship program in memory of two of Mad River’s long-time staff members Roy Emerton and Tom Sandell.
The year-long program provides funds for continuing education and is awarded to two members of the staff that have delivered high levels of service, hospitality and demonstrate a willingness to go above and beyond. Both of last years recipients will be back at the Club this summer, Tatyana Feiner is helping in both the back shop and golf shop this year and Isaac Swanton has been working on an internship in Ireland and will be returning later this summer.
An important component of both our programs is your feedback, please inform one of the department Managers know when you have an outstanding experience. They will follow-up and a positive acknowledgement or word of encouragement from you can also have a significant impact on the confidence of these young people.
Flag in or Out

There are a number of interesting and conflicting reports on whether significant benefit is achieved by leaving the flag in or removing it. An unintended consequence of this initiative is in an increase in damage to the cup edges as a result of golfers removing the ball while the flag is still in.
The reduced area available to retrieve the ball is resulting in increased damage to the turf and dirt on the cup edge. So, if you choose to putt with the flag in, in consideration of other players, please be careful when removing your ball that you’re not damaging the cup for golfers playing behind you.
One of my objectives this winter was to secure additional reciprocal golf arrangements for you both locally and across the country. The idea is to provide you with one premium golf club in each major city across the country.
I’m pleased that we now have reciprocal arrangements with the following Clubs;
Victoria Golf Club
Vancouver Golf Club
Edmonton Country Club
Earl Grey Golf Club (Calgary)
Niakwa Golf Club (Winnipeg)
Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club
Ashburn Golf Club (Halifax)
Final arrangements are nearing completion at a beautiful club in Montreal and a couple more GTA options. For more information and updates look on the website under the Golf header (Reciprocals). It’s important to note reciprocal arrangements at other clubs mirror ours, prime times are not available, so please understand access is only available during non-peak times. Advanced booking arrangements must be made and you can contact Brian or myself to arrange these.
Next year, I plan to work toward adding options in the U.S.
Vision 54
Saturday June 15th, will be another fantastic day at the Club with the founders of the VISION 54 School Lyn Marriot and Pia Nilson visiting Mad River for two half-day sessions.
They are regulars on the Golf Channel and have coached numerous Tour players to victory, including 9 major winners and four #1 ranked players.
Don’t miss out on an opportunity to work with these world class instructors, there are only 5 spots left, please contact Ryan at
If you have feedback for me regarding these or other items at the Club you can reach me by email at or by phone at 705-428-3673.
See you on the course,
Gary Ward,
General Manager
