The Smartest Play in Golf: Why You Should Aim for the Middle, Play for the Back, and Make Greens in Regulation Your #1 Goal

Too many golfers obsess over the pin — hunting flagsticks with rangefinders, imagining birdies, and then wondering how it all went wrong. The reality is, if you want to shoot lower scores with less stress, it’s time to simplify and adopt a smarter strategy:
  • Aim for the middle of the green.
  • Play to the back yardage.
  • Make Greens in Regulation (GIR) your mission.
  • Know more than just the flag — understand front, middle, and back yardages.
Here’s why this change in mindset can transform your game:

1. Pin-Hunting Creates Big Mistakes
Flagsticks are tempting, but they’re often sucker targets — especially when tucked near bunkers, over ridges, close to hazards, or back-left on #7. When you aim at the flag and miss, you're usually in trouble. When you aim for the middle of the green, your misses still stay safe — more putts, fewer chips, and more chances to score.

2. Playing to the Back Yardage Keeps You Out of Trouble
Amateurs notoriously under-club. Why? They remember their best 8-iron ever, not their average. They ignore wind, lie, and nerves. Playing to the back of the green yardage ensures you take enough club. Most greens are deeper than you think — and coming up short often brings bunkers, rough, or false fronts into play. Back is almost always better than short.

3. Greens in Regulation = Scorecard Gold
This is the scoring secret most golfers overlook. The more greens you hit, the more pars (and birdie looks) you’ll have. The pros make this their focus because they know even an average two-putt leads to a solid round. But if you miss the green, you're depending on scrambling — and most amateurs simply aren't good enough around the greens to rely on that.  Click the following links to join a Short Game Clinic or Short Game School

4. Knowing More Than Just the Pin Number Is Crucial
Lasering the flag is not enough. That number only tells you where the hole is — not how far you need to hit the ball. Every green has a front, middle, and back yardage. Without knowing all three, you’re guessing.

Front yardage tells you the minimum to cover trouble or avoid short misses.
Middle yardage is your safest target — often ideal for club selection.
Back yardage helps you choose enough club to avoid coming up short (especially when the flag is in the back).

By knowing all three, you make smarter decisions, manage risk, and stop leaving shots short of the green — the most common mistake in amateur golf.

If you don’t know your carry and total distances, you’re guessing every time you pull a club.
A “Map Your Bag” session on Trackman takes out the guesswork by showing you exactly how far each club goes.  To schedule a session, simply CLICK HERE

5. Simplify Strategy = Less Mental Load, Better Execution
When your only goal is to hit the green, and you’re armed with true yardage info (front, middle, back), you swing with more freedom and confidence. No indecision. No second-guessing. Golf becomes about execution, not guesswork.

Bottom Line:
If golf is a game of misses, the best players miss in the right places. Aim for the middle, use enough club, and know the full picture of the green — not just the pin. The more greens you hit, the lower your scores go. Period.
