Men's Captain Report

9/25/2023

Below is a snapshot of how the league concluded. Thanks to everyone who participated!

Senior Club Championship
On Thursday, Sept 21st, we held the 2023 Men’s Senior Club Championships. The weather was absolutely perfect! 42 Gentlemen threw their names in the hat and challenged themselves against a field. Congratulations to our flight winners, however two exceptional performances I believe require an honourable mention.

Congratulations to Grayling Lamont who won the overall Stableford competition with 39 points. Well done Grayling!

A very special congratulations goes out to our overall and gross score champion, Doug Painter.
Doug did something very special shooting 73 at the age of 73. Shooting your age is something that very few of us will ever experience. I decided to research the likelihood of a golfer ever doing it, and found that the odds are not very good to say the least. I copied this for your reading pleasure:

Some clubs keep track and honor players who accomplish the feat. For example, Lake Nona Country Club (Florida) has a plaque in the clubhouse with player names when they have done it. The club is 31 years old and has the typical number of members (about 300), approximately half of whom are over 65. The plaque has 30 entries, which means 30 times someone in the club has shot their age. Interestingly, 29 of those entries are a single player. As such only two players have done it, one once and one 29 times. That supports some of the speculation mentioned above: Shooting one’s age is hard to do for most senior golfers, but for those who can do it, they do it many times. But without the ages of the members and the number of rounds they play, it is nearly impossible to make an estimate of the sought-after probabilities.

So once again, Congratulations Doug! A day to remember at Mad River. (thus Life is Good at Mad)

Cupps Cup
On Friday, Sept 22nd, a group of gents travelled to Beacon Hall to play an Interclub. The team was comprised of those gents who stepped up last year to host the Beacon Hall gents.
Happy to say that, Mad River retained the Cupp’s Cup with a tie at the end of the day. Congrats to those gents that participated.

In the Loop

On Friday, Sept 29th, it was another day to remember for our very own Angelo Breda.

Angelo made his second hole in one at Mad, on the 11th hole. Witnessed by Daiva and Joseph Norkus. In 2017 he also had a hole in one on our 16th hole.

What gets better is that Angelo will turn 90 in February. Congratulations Mr. Breda, you’re truly inspiring all of us!
