Our opening week included a Rules seminar last Friday. For those that were unable to attend, you can check out the presentation by
clicking HERE. During the seminar I spent some time describing the changes to the marking on holes #1 & #12. These holes now have red stakes with green tops on the right-hand side, predominantly in the landing zone for tee shots. Most of our members are familiar with red stakes, which is a penalty area in which you receive a penalty of one stroke and drop your ball two club lengths, no closer to the hole at the point of entry/reference point.
The green tops will be less familiar to most players. The green tops indicate that the area has been deemed a NO PLAY ZONE. This means you do not have the option of playing your ball if found in the area. You MUST take the relief with one penalty stroke.
For hole #1 you would use the dropping procedure as mentioned above. With regard to hole #12, there are two drop zones which have been marked in the rough just alongside the fairway. If your ball comes to rest in the red staked, no play zone on this hole, you simply estimate which drop zone is closer to where your ball would have entered. You would still be subject to a one stroke penalty.
One last item to point out is that there is a large portion of the right-hand side of hole #1, in the landing area, that has been marked as ground under repair. This area will eventually be grass, however until that time, we do not have want any play from this area. The good news, if your ball is in GUR, not in the penalty area, this is a FREE drop! You would find your nearest point of relief and drop within one club length and proceed. For some of our members, this will be very straightforward to understand and apply the rule if it happens during their rounds. However, for those that are not as familiar with the rules of golf, Ryan RInneard has created a short video that describes the two changes. It is important that you understand if you plan to participate in club events, including match play later this month. As always, if you have questions about this change, please speak with me or one of the other golf professionals in the shop.
