When is it time to replace your wedges?

6/15/2020

Fresh wedge grooves are what allow the top players in the world to stop the ball within a close proximity to the hole.  New grooves can offer a player:
  1. More Spin
  2. Lower Launch
  3. Maximum Control

There are a few contributing factors that lead to wedge grooves wearing down.
  1. Frequent Play: Regular practice and play creates normal wear and tear to the wedge and results in gradual wearing down of the groove
  2. Bunker Shots: Bunker shots expose the face to millions of small pebbles and rocks, essentially sand blasting the face of the wedge
  3. Abnormal Conditions: Sandy Lies, debris on the ball, rocks, and bag chatter can all lead to gradual groove wear.
  4. Range Balls:  Wedges are predominantly cast from soft carbon steel.  Range balls and other hard covered golf balls will, over time, wear down the edge of the groove.

How Do I Inspect My Wedges For Groove Wear and Spin Loss?

Have a look at the image below.  Wedges may look fine but may not be delivering maximum spin.  You should inspect your wedges for groove wear every 60-70 rounds.  Start by inspecting the overall physical condition of the wedge and groove.  Secondly, see a certified fitter to evaluate your launch, spin, and roll out.

On Sunday June 28th, Titleist will be at the club doing fittings between 10am and 3pm.  Vokey Wedges are synonymous with excellence and are the #1 Wedge on Tour.  The new SM8 wedges are (hands down) the best wedges they have ever produced.  There are 3 spots remaining for club fitting this Sunday and if you feel that you would be interested in some new Vokey Wedges, or any of the new T-series Irons, Hybrids, Fairway Woods, Drivers, or Scotty Cameron Putters, please let me know:  [email protected]

Thank you for reading and I hope to see you on the first tee real soon.
